Television: His Dark Materials - Language and Representation

 


1) Write an analysis of the episode - using notes from the screening in class. Make specific, detailed reference to moments in the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots and movement, editing, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.)

In the episode the girls were in control, were presented as powerful,independent, and can handle stuff mean whiled the men were being aggressive violent and cant handle anything.

There was a change of society as in the episode there was a black women being one of the main character 


Camerawork, editing and sound: Low angle is use for the women to show how powerful and independent they are 

Mise-en-scene:Props mix between fantasy world and modern familiar objects 

Narrative and genre: witch fighting, witches super natural reveal emotions of character

Mrs Coulter seems to be powerful and independent whiled the men seem to be aggressive and violent and cant handle anything .

America net work  HBO role was important in making his dark materials because it was co-commissioned for an international audience along side of BBC.

it was said that the target audience is 14 and above this is because it was said on the web that 14 and above will  be fine to watch the series therefore children under the age of 14 isdnot allowed to watch it. 

2) What audience pleasures are offered by His Dark Materials - The City of Magpies? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.

Personal Identity: an example of a group of people  seeing themselves reflected is though the black witch. 

Personal Relationships: one relationship is between will and lyra. As audience may be interested in how the relation will turn out.

Diversion (Escapism): the audience will escape all of their problem as they will be so interested in the show and will make them forget their problem.   


3) Thinking of the 3 Vs audience pleasures (Visceral, Vicarious and Voyeuristic pleasures), which of these can be applied to His Dark Materials? Refer to specific scenes or moments in the episode to explain your answer. 
 

VICARIOUS PLEASURE as you get to experiencing something through the characters e.g time traveling, flying.

Season 2 did not receive as much love as season 1 which lead to the view of episode 1 of season 2 to be less compared to episode 1 season 1.


5) What might be some of the preferred and oppositional readings for His Dark Materials? Why did some fans love it? Why have other people criticised it? 

Some fans loved it because it looked great its robustly made and there are amazing actors everywhere occupying a well built universe however some fan didn't like it because the series is about magical worlds but season 2 didn't seemed to have much magic involved in it also it for teenagers .


1) How are the technical conventions different between 1963 Doctor Who and 2020 His Dark Materials (e.g. camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene)?

There is a better quality of his dark materials other doctor who and better camera and better lighten  this is because of the year and the society that the episode was made in. 


2) What similarities and differences are there between Doctor Who and His Dark Materials in terms of genre and narrative?

The characters- as in doctor who the characters were mainly white and in his dark materials the characters were mixed.
The power- as in his dark materials women had more power whiled doctor who the women has no control of anything and didn't have any sort of power.


3) How are representations of people, places and groups similar or different in the two shows?

in his dark materials women has a lot of centro and were able to handle things mean whiled in doctor whop the women add no control and weren't able to handle anything as they were seemed as weak. also people of colour were being presented in the dark materials whiled in doctor who, there was only white people that were demonstrated.
